Year Groups

Pupils in the Nursery and Reception Classes follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum which stimulates their social, intellectual and physical development.  There is provision covering all seven areas of learning and clear intent for what we aspire to offer our learning.  (refer to EYFS intent, implementation and impact document below).

Pupils in Years 1 and 2 work through Key Stage 1 of the National Curriculum.  Subjects are taught as discreet areas whilst opportunities are identified where possible to make cross curricular links so that pupils can learn and understand how learning and knowledge across subjects connect.

At all stages pupils work at a level which meets their needs. Pupils are in mixed ability classes with a classteacher. On occasions support staff work with individual children or groups of children to enhance their learning.

All children are taught:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Art
  • Music
  • Design Technology
  • History
  • Geography
  • Physical Education
  • Religious Education
  • Computing
  • Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education

Educational visits are arranged to support and enhance the work in many areas of the curriculum and parents are asked to make a contribution towards the cost. No child is, however, prevented from taking part in a visit because no contribution has been made towards the cost.

Pupils are assessed throughout the school year both informally and formally. At the end of Year 2 children are assessed in English & Mathematics in accordance with the requirements of the National Curriculum. Children in Year 1 have reading and writing assessments.

Teacher assessments are made on the children’s progress in all subjects through the year. Children are given targets in English and Maths which are reviewed twice a year. Parents are given the targets and asked to help their child achieve their targets/ Regular homework is set and, again, parents are asked to help their child to complete it.

The teaching hours are 32 per week including Assembly and breaktimes.

More information about the curriculum can be requested from the school office or from your child’s class teacher.
